Alcohol Rehab: Does Alcoholism Rehab Hinder Job Advancement?
by floodllama
Among alcoholics, one of the biggest barriers to entering alcoholism rehab is fear that taking this step can hinder one’s ability to get jobs and advance one’s career. While there is some legitimacy to this fear—stigma against alcoholism is still unfortunately widespread in our society—any recovering alcoholic who means well and aims to work hard can overcome this temporary blip in one’s personal and professional history.
Getting back to work
If your alcoholism rehab stint has taken place during an extended period of unemployment, then the most difficult step is going to be finding that first job. The good news is that in most cases, there is no need to disclose to potential employers what you have been through. And if your alcoholism never led to legal trouble, then potential employers never have to know about your past.
If for whatever reason you cannot hide your past from employers, it does not have to be a disaster. When the question comes up, do not linger on your past or make excuses. Answer that you are now proudly clean and sober and that you are eager to re-enter the workforce. Then move on to the next question. It is always better to be honest and up front with employers about your past, rather than have them find out later about your struggles.
Some alcoholics take a leave of absence from a secure job to enter rehab. In this situation, it is common to face some questions and even temporary stigmatization, but if you work hard and show that you are dedicated to sobriety, your coworkers will eventually forget about the absence.
Overcoming stigma
Fortunately, re-entering the workforce after alcoholism rehab is the hardest part. After that, there is no reason why your history of addiction should interfere with your job prospects. By staying committed to your recovery and demonstrating that you can be a productive worker, you do a service to recovered alcoholics everywhere. And in the end, most people have at least one loved one who has been in alcoholism rehab, so people are liable to be more understanding than you might think.
