The transitional period after a stay in a treatment facility is a difficult time for anyone in recovery, and the support and structure provided by a sober living environment can make all the difference in an individual’s efforts to stay sober. Carroll County Long-Term Treatment Facility had recently opened in Sykesville, MD, but there were no sober houses in Carroll County, leaving a dangerous void in the after-care plans of alcoholics and addicts who wished to continue to live and work in the area after treatment. The founders of the Brittain House, responding to the concerns expressed by Judicial and Health Department officials, decided to open up a halfway house for men at 80 Liberty Street in Westminster, MD on August 20, 2008. In founding the Brittain House, they saw a perfect opportunity to give back to the community and to pay tribute to the legacy of a close friend of theirs in recovery who had died in a work-related accident after six years of sobriety and active service.
