Do You Believe “Once an Addict, Always an Addict”?

Question by blu: Do you believe “once an addict, always an addict”?
This is what they teach in rehab/”A” meetings.
I once posed a question in group, “So, if I never do another drug the rest of my life I will die an addict?” … The other 49 men all said, “Yes.”
That’s some serious brainwashing.
I believe one’s conviction that they are an addict for life is a reservation to “pick up” again. They could say to them self (as their drug of choice gets near), “Why not? I’m suppose to be an addict.”
This is just one of the ways my method for recovery is different than what is taught conventionally.
My program is 100% successful.
Folks- I’m not even in recovery … I’m recovered.
Here’s an interesting tidbit. If I was to go to an “NA” meeting now and start preaching my philosophy they’d probably throw me out. My point of view reflects that one doesn’t need the meetings because it’s all behind … a closed chapter.
Jeff- You are correct by your reference that the most difficult part of addiction is mental. This is why I programmed my my to say, “I don’t do drugs … I am not going to subject my self to addiction again.” I don’t have the cravings because I changed my mind. I have reinforced this focus by being convinced I’m not an addict.
Folks- I know we can’t “unlearn” something but we can change the way we think about it.
Goldwing- If I use the word “effective” that is more indicative that the future may prove different. If I say “successful”, that is more indicative that it’s a win … just like the end of the ball game.
We are talking about how one looks at things. My method is successful, not effective.
Folks- I look back and see problem solved … w/ ea. passing day w/o the illegal drugs I was addicted to I am getting more reinforcement. If I conclude that I’m addicted for life I see the problem is still ahead.
Silver- I’m not buying that gene for disposition unless it covers a degree to that which one becomes hooked and what the substance one becomes addicted to. I think we all are addicted to something … coffee, chocolate, love, sex … it just happens that some are addicted to that which is illegal.
I quit smoking cigarettes relatively easily for a long period of time. I smoke now because I want to. Until I want to quit I’m addicted. It’s mind over matter.
I quit smoking cigarettes because I lived up to a promise to my self that I would do so at age 50.
If you think you are an addict for life then you are … and you WILL deal w/ it. If you don’t believe it, it’s over.
connor- Been clean for yrs. The time is not significant. I just went back to embracing my life style before my addiction.
I believe I started using illegal drugs trying to squeeze more out of life. Eventually I developed some disturbing physical maladies and I won’t ever let that happen again.

Yes. You can control the habit by not indulging, but the “wanting” will always be with you. I ignore the cravings and they eventually go away.
