Alcohol Rehab: How Long Should Alcoholism Rehab Take?

Every person entering rehab is at a different place in his or her addiction and has different needs from alcoholism rehab. This makes it difficult to say exactly how long rehab should take, as it often varies from person to person. Meanwhile, every rehab program has its own set of policies and procedures when it comes to keeping addicts in treatment. Here are a few factors that determine how long rehab should take.

Perhaps the most important factor is the seriousness of the addiction. Anyone who has had a severe addiction lasting many years is liable to need extensive inpatient treatment, and this can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. However, those whose addictions are newer and less destructive may be able to spend no more than the minimal amount of time in treatment. Some people can even get sober without staying overnight in a facility at all.

The next most important factor in determining how long alcoholism rehab takes is the level of cooperation and determination in the patient. Some alcoholics enter rehab despite lingering denial and even reluctance to get sober. In these cases, getting clean can take a particularly long time. However, if the addict has a strong desire to get sober and does not give in easily to temptation and negative thoughts, rehab can be astoundingly quick

Another important factor is physical health. Patients who are in relatively good physical condition often find it easy to rebound after an addiction. However, those who have let their addiction slowly wear away at their body often have difficulty gaining the momentum needed to get and stay sober. After all, one needs plenty of energy to resist relapse during alcoholism rehab, and those in better physical shape (or who are willing to get in shape quickly) will have an easier time recovering.

Finally, unfortunate thought it may be, money is also a factor. Some rehab programs are relatively quick and thus cost less than their longer-lasting counterparts. Others are longer and costlier. While it would be nice if every addict could go through a thorough alcohol rehab program, this is just not the case. Be aware, however, that just because a program is short and relatively cheap does not mean it does not work. If you are determined and genuinely ready to get sober, the length of the program does not matter.

Alcohol Rehab: Heard Around Town
The state plans to be spraying along Route 1 in Salisbury to kill pepperweed plants today.
