“Substance Abuse” and “issues” ?

Question by ninjagirlz: “Substance abuse” and “issues” ?
Why is it that it is said that all people who use “substances” have some sort of other issues, or that they use them to escape whatever their problems are ? Cant some people just use them occasionally because they like how they make them feel?? Just a thought.

Not all substance users have severe emotional/mental issues. In fact, many people who do choose to use a substance don’t become addicted and develop problematic tendencies. People do refer to this though because a large population of drug users get high for the sole reason of escaping reality, depression, physical pain or other underlying mental conditions.

Why would anyone take a chance on using something that just having it on them could cause them to go to jail or prison. That includes marijuana in many states still. People that are addicted will go to any lengths to get drugs and use them, even the chance of ending up in jail. Sane people without issues would not risk that. Most individuals core issue under the addiction is low self esteem.
