Alcohol Rehab: Eating Disorder Treatment Requires the Same Care as Drug and Alcohol Rehab

When most people think about a rehab center, their first thought goes straight to the abuse of illegal drugs or even alcohol, but what many people seem to overlook are eating disorders. A large number of people have a hard time understanding how an eating order develops, especially since people that are suffering from eating disorders never seem to consume anything that is mind altering or addictive.

However that is not the case as an eating disorder can often times be just as hard, or even harder, to break because the problem lies within the person’s self-image. It can often be overwhelmingly difficult trying to help someone see him or herself for the way that they are and except that. Most eating disorders arise out of low self-esteem or a person being far too self-critical. Always trying to strive for something that to them is perfection, but to the rest of society is unhealthy.

An eating disorder treatment program has quite a few differences in its set up than a drug rehab program. Instead of trying to teach the patient that they can live their life without having to turn to their substance of choice, counselors are trying to reintroduce the concept of eating back into their daily routine. Patients with an eating disorder need to develop a new system of eating, and depending on their disorder, this can take a lot of time and practice.

Part of their therapy program is going to be made up of meal planning classes and group eating experiences where they start to learn healthy habits in a monitored environment. Many times, people with eating disorders have gotten the idea that they need to be skinnier or that they are constantly overweight. This problem can arise from the media, but most of the time it has something to do with the way they are treated or portrayed by their loved ones.

Some people do not understand how much of an impact their words may have on others and in return, what they may perceive as constructive criticism may actually be extremely damaging to some one’s self confidence. The result can be a life changing and very dramatic experience, and people who suffer from eating disorders need to get help from a professional who knows what they are doing.

Josephine L. Carlson has spent a lot of time researching the different types of eating disorder treatment programs and has found that the best are based on the idea that people with disorders need to get physical and mental help in order for them to create healthier habits, as well as develop a love and appreciation for their lives. While attending an anorexia treatment program, she had to reintroduce her bodies to the concept of eating, and though it seems simple enough, it was quite difficult for her to become ok with the notion of eating. Meanwhile, she witnessed the bulimia treatment program working with people to fight the urge to throw up the food they had consumed.
